Publishing to Your kinetic Service Web Site with FTP

To publish to your kinetic Service hosted web site, you need an FTP client or web publishing tool with FTP, the FTP configuration settings, and appropriate web publishing permissions. This document covers the requirements for publishing, where to obtain permissions for publishing, and generic information on configuring an FTP client. Also included are two sections on configuring the ws-FTP client and Microsoft FrontPage 2000.

Web Publishing Requirements

Any FTP client program which supports long usernames should allow you to upload and download content to your organization's web site. MOREnet has not yet found an FTP client that, if configured properly, will not work with the kinetic Service.

Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions

1. Begin by logging into your account in kinetic Manager.
   
2. On the My Account page, scroll down to the Account Details section. If you have web publishing permissions assigned to your account, you will see permissions listed beneath the heading Web Publishing Permissions.
   
3. If you do not have web publishing permissions, contact one of your organization's account administrators to have them assigned.
   
4. If web publishing permissions have been assigned to your account, the FTP Host and FTP User ID are listed. You will need these values.
5. Additionally, the FTP Directory listings are the directories where you have permissions to publish in your organization's web site. You may publish content in these directories or any of their subdirectories. You will need this information when configuring your FTP client.

1. Host - The name of the host server to connect to.
   For the Host, enter the FTP Host value. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know this). The Host is the FTP server to which you want to connect.
   
   
2. User ID - The User ID is the account name with which to connect.
   For the User ID, enter the FTP User ID. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know this). The User ID is the account name to use when connecting to the Host.
   
   
3. Password - The password for the account.
   This is the same password which the account uses to log in to kinetic Manager, and to retrieve e-mail.

   Note: Depending on the FTP Client you use, there may be slight differences in what they call each of these fields. For example, some clients may refer to the "destination host", "host address", or "connect-to host".
   
   

4. There are often other configuration values that can be filled in as well, such as Host Type, Initial Remote Directory, File Mask, etc., but these are not usually required fields. If you do not know what these optional fields do, it is often best to leave them set at their default value(s).
   
   
5. Once the required fields are filled in, and any optional fields if you know them, you can connect via FTP to publish content for your organization's site.
   
   
6. When you are prompted for a password, enter the password for your kinetic Service e-mail account. This is the same password which you use to log in to kinetic Manager, and retrieve your e-mail.
   
   
7. Initially you will be in the default directory for your account. Open the WebPublish directory. If you have web publishing permissions, you will see them listed. (For a more thorough discussion of what may be listed, read Viewing Your Web Site with an FTP Client).
   
   
8. Follow the folders/directories listed from the FTP Directory listings (in kinetic Manager) to find the locations within the web site where you have web publishing permissions. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know the FTP Directory values).
   
   
9. Note that the www folder is the "root" (the beginning) of the web site for your organization. This is where the main index page for your organization's web site is located.
   
   

An example:
If your FTP Directory was WebPublish/test.kinetic.more.net/www/jschool, then you would need to follow the folders listed as follows:
WebPublish --> test.kinetic.more.net --> www --> jschool

In this example, the jschool folder and all folders and content within or beneath it would be available for you to publish web content within.

1. When ws-FTP is first opened, the Session Properties window displays. Click the New button.
   
   
2. The Profile Name can be whatever you would like.
   
   
3. For the Host Name/Address field, enter the FTP Host as listed on your kinetic Manager My Account page under the Account Details section. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know this).
   
   
4. The Host Type field is optional, but if you set a value for this field, select UNIX (standard).
   
   
5. For the User ID field, enter your complete kinetic Service e-mail account name. For example: jdoe@netace.k12.mo.us . (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know this).
   
   
6. Click the Apply button.
   
   
7. Click the OK button to connect via FTP.
   
   
8. Once connected, you will be in the default directory for your account. Double-click on the WebPublish directory.
   
   
9. If you have web publishing permissions, you will see them listed. (For a more thorough discussion of what may be listed, read Viewing Your Web Site with an FTP Client).
   
   
10. Follow the folders/directories listed from the FTP Directory listings (in kinetic Manager) to find the locations within web space to which you have web publishing permissions. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know the FTP Directory values).

12. Double-click on the appropriate directories, following them until you reach the section of the web site in which you want to upload or download web content.

1. When you are ready to publish content for the first time in Microsoft FrontPage 2000, click on File - Publish Web. The Publish Web dialogue box opens.
   
   
2. In the "Specify the location to publish your web to:" box, type ftp://
   
   
3. Enter the value listed in kinetic Manager for your FTP Host to the end of the above, and then type / (a forward slash). (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know the FTP Host value).
   
   
4. Enter the value listed in kinetic Manager for your FTP Directory to the end of the above. (Read the section Reviewing Web Publishing Permissions if you do not know the FTP Directory value).

   For example:
   If your FTP Host is ftp.test.kinetic.more.net, and your FTP Directory is WebPublish/test.kinetic.more.net/www/fp2000Test, the value for the "Specify the location to publish your web to" would be:
   ftp://ftp.test.kinetic.more.net/WebPublish/test.kinetic.more.net/www/fp2000Test

5. Click the Publish button.
   
   
6. When you are prompted for your (user) Name and Password, enter your complete e-mail account name then your password.

   Important - First Time Publishing
   If all content in your local FrontPage "Web Content" folder on your computer does not match the content on the web site, FrontPage 2000 will prompt if you want to remove the non-matching content from the web site. If you answer 'Yes', FrontPage will delete all the non-matching content from the web site. Answer 'No' to this prompt unless you intend to delete all the non-matching content!
   
   

7. FrontPage will then publish your selected web page(s) to the web site.
   
   
8. Click the Done button when FrontPage reports "Web site published successfully!".

Notes About FrontPage 2000

• FrontPage 2000 offers a link to "view your published web site" when the "Web site published successfully!" confirmation window opens. This link will not work correctly since FrontPage will attempt to contact the FTP server using HTTP (which is not allowed by MOREnet's servers).
  
  
• FrontPage 2000 will automatically remember the last value you set for the "Specify the location to publish your web to" field between editing sessions.
  
  
• FrontPage 2000 will remember the (user) Name and Password only during the current editing/publishing session.
  
  
• File names and directory names under Windows and FrontPage are not case sensitive. However, UNIX systems are case sensitive. If you upload web pages and graphics to the web site and local links return 404 Not Found errors and/or graphics do not display, check the case of the file and/or directory names. They must match on a UNIX server. For further information regarding file and directory names, refer to the Overview of Website File Usage.
