Frequently Asked Questions about Web Site Services

Q: What does the standard, initial set up of a web site in the Managed Web Hosting Service support?

A: The standard initial web site set up will support static content and the use of Apache Server-Side Includes (SSI). See the section on Server Side Includes regarding SSI. Additionally, the standard set up includes the ability to configure username/password protected sections of content and redirects.

Q: Does the web server support PHP and Perl applications?

A: Yes, the Managed Web Hosting Service does support PHP and Perl. See the section on the PHP/Perl Application Server.

Q: Does the Managed Web Hosting Service support JSP and Java Servlet applications?

A: No. Due to insufficient demand, the server does not have support for JSP and Java Servlets. The option for a Tomcat Java Application Server has been discontinued.

Q: Does the Managed Web Hosting Service support ASP or ColdFusion?

A: The Managed Web Hosting Service does not support ASP or ColdFusion.

Q: The person who had administrative permissions for our organization in the Web Hosting Service is no longer with our organization. We now have no one who can set publishing permissions or create new accounts. What do we do?

A: Have your organization's designated MOREnet Contact call MOREnet's Technical Support. Request that the account of the former kinetic Service administrator be disabled. You will also need to decide who is going to be the new kinetic Service Administrator for your organization. MOREnet recommends that you have at least two. The account permissions for these people will be upgraded to an Administrator. Additionally, the new administrators will probably need training. This will also need to be requested when you call.

Q: We have a web page with a form on it. We would like our visitor's submissions from this form to be emailed to [our person who handles this]. How can we do this?

A: MOREnet provides a version of the Matt's ScriptArchive FormMail script for use by web sites hosted within the Web Hosting Service. This script is a free, popular, common, and stable web site utility for taking web form submissions online and turning them into an email which is delivered to an assigned email address within your organization. Documentation for using this utility with your hosted web site can be found in the FormMail for kinetic Service section.

Q: We moved our web content to our new Managed Web Hosting Service hosted web site and now some of our HTML href links are broken. The domain name stayed the same and these links worked previously, so why are the links broken now?

A: The web servers used for the Managed Web Hosting Service are case sensitive. If you were previously on a non-case sensitive web server, this is the most likely cause. Look closely at the directory and file names listed in the broken links. If, for example, an href links to a file named INDEX.Html, and the file name on disk is actually index.HTML, the web server will consider them to be two different files. Q: Can I use Microsoft FrontPage to design my web pages?

A: Yes. The Managed Web Hosting Service places no restrictions on web page design tools.

Q: Can I use the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extentions?

A: FrontPage Server Extensions are not part of the Managed Web Hosting Service. In most cases, the Managed Web Hosting Service currently does or will in the future provide for comparable features and functionality. For example, commonly used features offered by the FrontPage Server Extensions such as full text searching and form handling are currently handled by comparable alternative software usable by all Managed Web Hosting customers, regardless of their choice of web editor. Although web page counters are not currently provided by the web hosting service, the automatically generated Analog web site hit statistics reports provide the same numbers plus considerably more detailed information about access to an organization's entire web site.

Q: My FTP client displays "550: File exists" when I attempt to delete a directory on my web site. Am I doing something wrong?

A: Many clients will not allow you to delete non-empty directories. If you use a client that behaves this way, you must navigate into the directory, delete the files, and then delete the directory.

Some FTP and web site management clients provide additional functionality to assist in the deletion of non-empty directories. These clients recursively delete files and subdirectories below the directory you selected and then delete the directory as the final step in the process. If you're unsure if your client supports this functionality, check the configuration options and documentation for an 'allow delete of non-empty folders' setting.

Q: I used kinetic Manager to add a web publishing permission to an account so the account holder could publish to the web site. After adding the permission, I realized that it was set for the wrong directory. I immediately removed the permission, but kinetic Manager reported an internal server error. Is something wrong with the account?

A: The account is fine, but the publishing permission may still exist. This is a timing-related issue that you may experience if you add a publishing permission and then immediately remove it. Login to kinetic Manager and review the account's web publishing permissions. If the permission still exists, remove it.
