Configuring MOREnet-hosted E-mail in Macintosh OS X
Settings for All Clients
User Name: Complete e-mail address
Example: johndoe@kinetic.more.net
Server Settings: Use either POP or IMAP for
receiving (incoming) mail; use SMTP for sending
(outgoing) mail.
MOREnet Outgoing Server (SMTP)
SMTP (with authenticated SSL encryption)
All: smtp.kinetic.more.net
Authentication is by user name (complete e-mail address) and password using
SSL.
SSL uses port 465 or, in some clients, an alternate port.
MOREnet Incoming Servers (POP or IMAP)
POP, POP3 (no encryption)
eMINTS: pop.teachers.emints.org
All others: pop.yourdomainname |
Or |
IMAP (no encryption)
eMINTS: imap.teachers.emints.org
All others: imap.yourdomainname |
Macintosh OS X Clients
If the native firewall is started with its default configuration,
port 465, the port needed for outgoing SMTP communication, will be blocked.
The firewall must either be turned off in Sharing System
Preference or,
preferably, be custom configured to allow port 465 traffic.
To configure the firewall for port 465:
- Open Sharing
System Preference and choose Firewall. Stop
the firewall.
- Click New.
- In the Port Name list, choose Other.
- In the Port Number box, type 465 (in 10.4, type 465 in
both TCP and UDP
Ports).
- In the Description box,
type Authenticated SMTP.
- Click OK.
- In the Allow menu, select the Authenticated
SMTP check box.
- Restart the firewall.
Eudora for Mac OS X
Support for SSL in Eudora 6.2 requires Mac OS revision 10.2
and above. These instructions have been tested with Eudora 6.2.
- Start Eudora.
- In the Eudora menu, choose Preferences.

In the Getting Started window, type your user name,
e-mail address and server names.
- In the left menu, click the Checking Mail icon.
- Select
your preferred Mail Protocol (POP or IMAP).
- Confirm that Authentication is set to Passwords.
- In the left menu, click the Sending Mail icon.
- Select the Allow
authentication check box.
- In the left menu, click the SSL icon.
- Confirm that SSL
for POP and SSL
for IMAP are set to None.
- In the SSL for SMTP list, choose Required (Alternate
Port).
- Under Standard Port SSL Negotiation, select TLS
1.0 (Cyrus).

In the left menu, click the Ports and Protocols icon.
- Change
the SMTP
port from 25 to 465.
- Click OK.
Mail for Mac OS X
These instructions have been tested with versions 1.3 and 2.0.
- Start Mail.
- In the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
- Under Accounts, type your name, e-mail address, incoming
mail server, user name (your entire e-mail address) and password.

In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) list, choose Add Server.
- In the Outgoing Mail Server box, type
smtp.kinetic.more.net.
- Change Server
port to 465.
- Select the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) check box.
- In the Authentication list, choose Password.
- Type your entire e-mail address in the User Name box
and your e-mail password in the Password box.

Click OK.
- Click the close box in the
upper left of the Preferences window and save changes when prompted.
Netscape
These instructions have been tested with version 7.2.
- Open Netscape Mail and Newsgroups.
- In the Edit menu, choose Mail and
Newsgroups Account Settings.
- In Account Settings, type your name and e-mail address.

In the left menu, click Server Settings.
- In the Server Name box, type the appropriate
pop mail server.
- In the User Name box, type your full e-mail address .
- In the left menu, click Outgoing
Server (SMTP).
- In the Server Name box, type the SMTP server name.
- In the Port box, type 465.
- Select the Use name and password check box.
- In the User
Name box, type your entire e-mail address.
- Under Use secure connection, select SSL.

Click OK.
Thunderbird
These instructions have been tested with version 1.0.2.
- Open Thunderbird.
- In the Tools menu, choose Account
Settings.

Type an account name and your name and e-mail address.
- In the left menu, click Server Settings.

In the Server Name box, type the appropriate pop mail server.
- In the User Name box, type your full
e-mail address.
- In the left menu, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
- In the Server Name box, type the SMTP
server name.
- In the Port box, type 465.
- Select the Use name and password check box.
- In the User Name box, type your
entire e-mail address.
- Under Use secure connection, select SSL.

Click OK.
