Macintosh Classic Clients
The following e-mail clients have been tested with versions
of OS 9. Earlier versions of Classic Mac OS may require older programs
that may not support the authenticated SSL SMTP protocol necessary to send
mail to MOREnet servers.
Eudora 6.1.1 for Mac OS 9
Eudora 6.1.1 is the last released version for Mac OS
Classic. System Requirements for version 6.1.1 include Mac OS 9.0 or later
with CarbonLib 1.6 or later.
Configuring SSL Authentication
Authentication with SSL in Eudora requires use of the system
feature System Keychain. The Keychain Access control panel must be loaded
and have a keychain configured. To configure a keychain, open the Keychain
Access control panel. If a keychain has not been configured, the system
will prompt you to configure one. Follow the steps for creating a new keychain
and close the control panel.
Configuring E-mail
- Start Eudora.
- In the Special menu, choose Settings.
-
In the Getting Started window, type your name, e-mail
address and server names.
- In the left menu, click the Checking Mail icon.
- Select your preferred Mail Protocol (POP or IMAP).
- Confirm that Authentication is set to Passwords.
- In the left menu, click the Sending Mail icon.
- Select the Allow authentication check box.
- In the left menu, click the SSL icon.
- Confirm that SSL for POP and SSL for IMAP are
set to None.
- In the SSL for SMTP list, choose Required (Alternate
Port).
- Under Standard Port SSL Negotiation, select TLS
1.0 (Cyrus).
- Click OK.
- To check that mail is working, compose and send a test message. After sending
this initial e-mail message, you will receive an Unknown SSL
Certificate Message alert box. Click OK.
- In the
Add Root Certificate window, select the Add
to Keychain check box.
- In the When Using This Certificate list, choose
Always Trust.
- Click OK.
- When prompted, type your Keychain password.
- Close the Keychain Access window.
- Look for the test message in the Eudora out box to confirm that the test
message has been sent.
Netscape 7 for OS 9
These instructions have been tested with Netscape 7.02, the last released
version of Netscape for Mac OS Classic.
Note: According to Netscape, authenticated
SSL SMTP protocol is supported in version 6 and later. Implementation of authenticated
SMTP through SSL in version 7.02, however, appears to have a bug related
to authentication on port 465. Authenticated SMTP will work when set to the
default port 25.
- Open Netscape Mail and Newsgroups.
- In the Edit menu, choose
Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings.
- In Account Settings, type your name and e-mail address.
- In the left menu, click Server Settings.
- In the Server Name box, type the appropriate pop mail
server.
-
In the User Name box, type your full e-mail address.
- Click Outgoing
Server (SMTP)
- In the Server Name box, type the outgoing server name.
- In the Port box, leave the default
port 25.
- Select the Use name and password check box.
- In the User Name box, type your entire e-mail address.
- Under Use secure connection (SSL), select Always.
-
Click OK.
Outlook Express 5.06
The last version of Outlook Express for Mac OS Classic is 5.06,
which requires Mac OS 8.1 or later. Earlier versions of 5 have been found to
be incompatible with authenticated SMTP through SSL. Please upgrade to version
5.06.
- Start Outlook Express.
- In the Tools menu, choose Accounts.
- Click on your default account. Then click Edit.
- Type your name and e-mail address.
- In the Account ID box, type your entire e-mail address.
- In the POP server and
SMTP server boxes, type the appropriate servers.
- Type your password.
- Under SMTP server, click Click here for advanced sending
options.
- Select the SMTP service requires secure connection
(SSL) check box.
- Select the Override default SMTP port check box and type
465 in the box.
- Select the SMTP server requires authentication check box.
- Select Log on using.
- Type your entire e-mail address in the Account ID box
and type your e-mail password.
- Click the small box
in the upper left corner of the active window to close the advanced
